(WASHINGTON, D.C., November 29, 2007) - Grassroots Enterprise (GRE), a high-tech communications firm specializing in building grassroots support for causes, products and companies, today announced the launch of its new "I am Smoke-Free" application built on the Facebook® Platform to open a new frontier of activism on behalf of The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. The "I am Smoke-Free" application is the inaugural offering by GRE to deploy applications that make it easier for our clients to recruit, engage, and mobilize activists using the power of Facebook.
This is the first of many GRE-deployed applications that will enable our clients to launch actions within Facebook and seamlessly take full advantage of our existing back-end activism system, Grassroots Multiplier®.
This will offer a range of advantages, including:
- The ability to launch actions on behalf of clients that enable their supporters on Facebook to contact Congressional or state officials from within the Facebook environment;
- Real-time synching with Grassroots Multiplier®, avoiding the need for duplicate databases;
- Real-time, opt-in, reporting on actions taken by our clients' supporters who use Facebook, via the robust reporting system of Grassroots Multiplier®.
"Facebook has clearly created an incredibly powerful Platform for generating activism, and we look forward to continuing our work with our clients to help them get the most out of it," said Anne Champlin, VP of Client Services of GRE.
"We're extremely happy to work with Grassroots Enterprise to launch this new effort as part of our work to protect kids from the dangers of tobacco addiction and second hand smoke," said Carter Headrick, Grassroots and Field Operations for the Campaign. "And the fact that this application fully synchs with our existing structure will make it far easier to manage and mobilize these new activists."
The "I am Smoke-Free" application will allow users to:
- Declare themselves and their profile to be "smoke-free"
- Find out if their state is smoke-free, i.e., banning smoking in bars and restaurants
- Take action from within the Facebook application to write to their governors, if their states are not smoke-free
- Find out which of their friends might be at risk, living in non smoke-free states
- Contact those friends, and invite them to write their elected officials as well.
The "I am Smoke-Free" application is GRE's first step in a marathon of innovative application deployments for clients focused on making targeted activism easier for users with real-time synching and reporting for the organizations they support.

DC Olympic Committee
GRE seized the coming of the 2006 winter Olympics to demonstrate the power of combining creativity and technology.
To advocate for voting rights for the District of Columbia, GRE drew comparison to other U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico and Guam who have their own Olympic teams, and established a DC Olympic Curling Team to make a bid for participation in the quirky sport at the Games in Turin, Italy.
